A non-smoking day
Today's mood: :-)

France

I woke up this morning feeling slightly wibbly but not particularly ill or hungover. Pip was the same and Jamie was a little bit smug for having not drunk the night before. He regailed us with all sorts of stories which probably weren't true.

Today I set up the stereo and the PC so now I have music and email, which is a good thing. I've also now got an account with Liberty Surf which was free to set up and with no monthly charge, but costs about 0,1fr a minute. Both Philip and Jamie have figured out how to log in to Windows 2000 and then SSH to edina to run wvdial and log on. I should get linecontrol working but I can't because I'm stupid. But I will persevere and see what happens.

I drove to the shop without Philip's assistance today to get some bits. My Halifax Visa card was declined because I'd missed a payment. Investigation revealed NatWest had declined the direct debit transaction so the card cancelled automatically, but NatWest say there's no reason why they would've declined it and that they couldn't see the transaction coming in. The Halifax kept me on hold and then unbarred the card. Very strange. We'll see what happens next month. Amusement came from sitting in a bar at Lac St Mathieu (gorgeous bar boy on today) chatting to the man on the phone and suddenly exclaiming "Coo - there's two flies shagging on that beermat" which reduced him to fits of giggles.

Tonight's meal was spinach and salmon tart with vegetables and potatoes. Very yummy; both the others seem to be impressed by my culinary skills although Jamie is turning out to be as domesticated as a half-licked stamp so will need training. He's very good at standing around observing ("helping") and being in the way. That said, he was topless most of the day so he's suitably forgiven.

As an observation, Jamie is very gay. He wears marigolds to wash up if there's been meat on a plate and won't kill bugs, preferring to squeal and flap whenever a mosquito bites him. Funny lad. I don't think he's enjoying himself and was expecting more glamour than just lying around in the sun doing nothing. Oh well.

It occured to us at about 10pm that playing "Land of Hope and Glory" very loudly (by accident - it was on the CD after the Cello Concerto) might be slightly tactless to the locals. It's probably bad enough that there are two English plated cars outside (although there are loads of Brits here this year) but Elgar at that time? It'll be Crown Imperial tomorrow!

Went thunderstorm hunting in the evening but by the time we'd found the big hill (whose name escapes me) the storms were over. No shooting stars tonight, alas, but some blinding sheet lightning.

Mildred has a new friend who keeps her company as she sits on the grass under the trees: a glow worm who glows a brilliant green light. Very cute.

One minor wrong-side-of-road incident but no other cars.
