A non-smoking day
Today's mood: :-)

Au Vieux Chataignier, France

Well. I'm here. My new home for the next four months or so.

After seven hours of driving, I found my way to St. Mathieu then Pip rescued us. Like eek - I've only been here once before and I managed to get to within about three kilometres of the place. Very impressed! It's surprising how many bits and pieces I remembered as I drove past them.

I have not made any wrong side of road mistakes yet, surprisingly. French driving is incredibly bizarre - they don't have stopping distances and are incredibly impatient. Oh well - I'll get used to it.

I went shopping and bought some bits and pieces to cook for dinner, including four bottles of wine which weighed in at about 90p each but tasted very pleasant indeed.

I cooked a creation for dinner. It was a multi-dietary requirement meal, because I'd forgotten that Jamie is a vegetarian. So, chicken breasts, rice, and tomato/vegetable sauce. We had the chicken, he had more rice. Very yummy food actually. Philip and I drank an extraordinary amount of alcohol to accompany the food and got rather tipsy. Jamie stayed sober, probably for fear we may corrupt him.

I have a mobile phone signal. Just. Upstairs. Hanging out of the window. Barely.

After food and drinking, we all staggered down the road and had a look at the sky. Here there is no ambient light so we could just stand (swaying slightly) and look at the stars. As it was crystal clear, it was possible to see everything, including the Milky Way in great detail. I saw four shooting stars and Jamie saw six. They were quite spectacular and clear as could be.

I saw the first hornet I've seen for years. Big fucker, too. We nerve gassed it with some "kapo super actif" which rendered it motionless with alarming speed. It died under the washing machine, so no risk of treading on it, thankfully.

We have consumed all the Becherovka already. Oops. I shall have to get Graham to courier me some more.
