Miscellaneous Space Courses and Opportunities in the UK


This is an attempt to provide basic information on all courses and opportunities available to UK residents with a significant space-related content but not listed in the undergraduate or postgraduate course pages. There are probably other courses in Astronomy and / or Astrophysics which we have not attempted to catalogue here. For more detailed / up-to-date information, contact the appropriate organisation.     1 year (full time) or 2-3 year (part time) postgraduate course
  • Summer Undergraduate

  • Research Fellowships (SURF)
    10 week research project at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for undergraduates. Some of the positions offered are at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which is managed by Caltech. See also The Essential SURFer's Guide.
  • Space School UK
  • 1 week courses for students aged 14-18 and their teachers, held in Leicester. Contact Jean Collins.
  • 6th Form Space Conference
  • Held annually (usually April) at Nottingham University, organised by The Workshop, P.O. Box 40, Loughborough LE11 1PT, Tel. 01509 235879, Fax 01509 218808. N.B. I'm not certain that this is still running- anyone who knows please let me know!
  • University of Surrey

  • Continuing Education Courses
    Includes courses on spacecraft dynamics and spacecraft systems.
  • Summer Internships in

  • Planetary Science
    10 weeks summer work for undergraduates at the Lunar and Planetary Institute and NASA's Johnson Space Centre (JSC), Houston, Texas.
  • Alpbach Summer School
  • ~9-day summer school in the Austrian Alps, organised by the Austrian Space Agency (ASA). Different theme each year.
  • JPL Summer School

  • for Planetary Sciences
    Held each year at JPL in California. See web site for details.
  • Training and Mobility of

  • Researchers (TMR)
    European Commission scheme.
  • British Council
  • Worth investigating for overseas opportunities.
