Users can then, on the fly, generate their own views. We have a limited number of users (40 or so) looking at events this way, and the ObjectServer does not seem much the worse for wear. However, 400 of anything connected to the ObjectServer would undoubtedly bring it to its knees. I would suggest pre-canning queries which would hit the ObjectServer every so often and generate an html page. This way, your users would only be reloading the html page, as opposed to each one doing a cgi/sql/java/etc.. query. Although rather than running the queries whether or not someone wanted the data I'd be inclined to perform a real lookup (and cache the result) only if it hadn't been run for a reasonable period of time, otherwise send back the recent cached results. It will depend somewhat upon the nature of your users - whether each one is going to be looking at a different data set, or whether it is likely that they'll be "reload fiends". You could also consider doing like the jeld does - one connection kept open to the objectserver, and handle the requests coming in submitting each one in turn and sending back the results. (Another idea - nco_proxy - I'm not 100% sure on what the nco_proxy/objectserver combination currently lets through and what it blocks - I and some other people were pushing for the objectserver to restrict operations from proxy connections - but that might also be a way of multiplexing and keeping the connect/disconnect load off the objectserver, without writing any daemon code yourself.) Also, something that Pete alluded to but didn't highlight - don't use isql if you want to be able to do a reliable, robust job of this. Find some Sybase libraries to link against (calling from Perl, Python, TCL, VBScript, whatever is your favourite) or see what the current state is of the FreeTDS project . James.
