The Town of Mirrortown

Mirrortown is a relatively new town, built within the last twenty years or so. It is located deep in the Withered Peak mountains, but rather than being a grim and craggy place, it is actually something of a marvel, as it is located at a scene of incredible natural beauty. Just to the east of the town lies the huge, deep Mirror Lake, from which the town takes its name, and while the pass in which the town lies is not high enough to be too cold, it still commands an impressive view of the surrounding terrain.

In keeping with the rather 'up market' image that the town is trying to cultivate, the Hall of Nobles has recently moved to the town, and is situated by the lakeside. Not far to the south, work is progressing upon a refurbished Marina, from which the nobility sail forth in their pleasure yachts upon the lake.

Mirrortowns story is not one entirely of success though, for trade has, in recent years, become risky. No more than a league to the south of the town, the major trade route runs through a narrow gorge, and passes what was traditionally an overgrown pass heading east. One day some rather overzealous adventurers hacked their way through, only to discover a hidden Orc fortress! The orcs had forgotten about the pass, just had the humans, and had been, up to then, mounting raids into the Drakenwood Forest, with only limited success, due to the rampages of a dreadful creature known as the Grik. Many orcs had died to this, seemingly invincible beast, and the fortress had long been in decline. Now, suddenly, with a new staging ground openned up to them, and relatively lightly protected caravans passing within but half an hours march from the fortress, the Orcs fortunes began to improve.

Thus Mirrortown has a trade problem. So many great projects are planned and under development there, but the materials, and to a degree the will, have run short.

One other major event in Mirrortowns history is of note. When the town was under construction, one of the Mages employed to blast rocks into managable slabs accidently triggered a major rockslide. The slide smashed its way towards the lake, but mysteriously stopped some ten feet short of the waters edge. When the mage investigated, he found an invisible wall of force had brought the rocks up short, although he could tell little else. A council of Mages was convened, and they decided to try and bring down the barrier to see what it protected. Mustering all their combined might, they hurled a dispellation spell of great force at the barrier, which crackled and then shattered into shards of ice. Gasps rang out all around the lake, for in the very centre, a tower of the purest white shimmered into being, reaching towards the sky with a single pinacle roofed in gold.

The tower came to be known as the Tower of Trials, and was found to contain creatures of great Good and great Evil, seemingly bound and preserved against the ravages of time by the eldrytch magic that had for so long hidden it from view.
